The TNA MPs defying police orders have organised events to commemorate the Mahaveer Day in different locations in the North today, the Sunday Observer learns.
It is reported that TNA MP Dharmalingam Siddharthan will hold a candle lit vigil near the Mahaveer graves in Kilinochchi while former TNA MP M.K.Shivajilingam is expected to lit a flame of sacrifice at the historic Nalloor temple to remember the LTTE cadres killed in the conflict.
A ceremony is also expected to take place near the TNA office in Jaffna.
The LTTE used to celebrate Mahaveer Day on November 27 to remember their cadres killed in combat. The attempts to continue that tradition by pro LTTE elements were banned by the government after the annihilation of the terror outfit.
Meanwhile the students and teachers of the Jaffna university on Friday lit candles inside the university premises and planted tree saplings to remember the war dead. On Saturday some students celebrated LTTE Leader Prabhakaran’s 62nd birth anniversary with a symbolic gesture by cutting a cake. The place where the cake was placed was decorated with balloons and soft drinks. November 26 is the birth day of the terrorist leader Prabhakaran.
Defence State Minister Ruwan Wijewardena said the government will not allow attempts to celebrate LTTE’s Mahaveer day.
