An experience of a lifetime

30 July, 2022

They say that if the world were likened to a book, then those that do not travel would have only read a single page of that book. It is my utmost privilege to say that I was able to read quite a few pages and allow others who looked upon me to gaze upon a glimpse of the page that would be Sri Lanka and its Leo and Lion movements.

With over 200 countries in attendance at the Lions Clubs International Convention 2022 held in Montreal, and each country sending their most youthful, driven, and talented individuals in the field of Leoism and Lionism, being in attendance with these bright personalities was quite a humbling experience. It was also a moment of tremendous pride to be able to represent my home and motherland at the convention and showcase our beautiful nation and its culture to the entire world. Being a part of a moment where the world looked on as we showed that Sri Lanka stands strong and united was an experience that has been carved into my heart forever.

One might have expected that with such a diverse range of individuals who are all proud representatives of their homelands, it would be inevitable for there to be some amount of clash or disagreement. However, how each and every participant communicated their ideas and carried out their work whilst exuding pride and poise and also being open and accepting of criticism is proof to me that no matter the language barrier, or a difference in cultures or opinions, we as humans can always strive towards unity and peace, regardless of our differences. Whenever an inevitable stumble would occur when attempting to break through a language barrier or something of the sort, a helping hand was always at the ready to ensure true communication and discourse.

It showed me what Lionism was truly about.

There were many moments where I was truly shocked to witness how quickly we, as Leos from different corners of the world were able to bond and go from strangers to colleagues and friends at a moment’s notice. It truly took no time at all for us to become comfortable with each other and it was an eye-opening experience to converse with these diverse characters and understand how they organised and structured their actions to keep Leoism thriving in their countries.

It was truly a great lesson for all Sri Lankan Leos, myself included.

The memories that I made during the convention were precious and while all of them will be looked back at fondly by me, there are a few that have earned a special place in my memories. The parade of nations was undoubtedly one of those moments as it was the most iconic event during my stay.

With the vivid colors blending together and the eye-catching decorations showing so much character and individuality, it was truly spectacular to see every nation showcasing themselves while uniting as one and marching together down the streets of Montreal.

Another memory I will treasure was receiving the opportunity to witness two great Lions from Sri Lanka, PCC Mahesh Pasqual and PDG K.H Lasantha Gunawardana be appointed as the International Director and Leo Club Program Advisory Panellist LCI/LCIF, for the two-year term 2022-2024.

Needless to say, the 2022 convention was an experience of a lifetime and I cannot wait for the Lions Club International Convention to be held again in Boston, the USA in 2023.
