While fearing that the fuel crisis could go against conducting the remaining matches in the inter club League followed by the Clifford Cup, Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) is preparing to conduct their Annual General Meeting (AGM) under the supervision of the National Olympic Committee (NOC).
This is their most urgent commitment in their agenda after the Court of Appeal had rejected the Gazette Notification issued by the former Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa suspending SLR from functioning. President of SLR Rizly Illyas said that they will first conduct meetings to plan on conducting the AGM. Thereafter, they will meet with the officials from the clubs on whether they can field teams to complete the league tournament followed by the Clifford Cup tournament that is a much looked forward to event.
“The situation in the country is worsening and without fuel players will not be able to attend practices at their home venues. This will make it impossible for the clubs to field teams at future encounters and tournaments will have to be put on hold for some time,” said Illyas.
Presently, SLR is concentrating on preparing the players for the Commonwealth Games (CG) which is the top priority. Sri Lanka will be fielding a men’s team and a women’s team in the Sevens format.
