1 April, 2018

Did you know that the first breadfruit tree was planted in Galle by the Dutch? In any of your visits to Galle Fort, have you paid attention to this tree that was brought to Sri Lanka around 300 years ago and has now grown big and branched out all over the island?

YuSit, an innovative research department specializing in cultural heritage, comprises archeologists, historians and computer engineers. Based in France, they have developed a visitor assistance app for Galle Fort, highlighting 20 points of attraction, one of which is the oldest breadfruit tree. Catering to the wishes of both, local and foreign tourists, this app captures the essentials of Galle heritance.

The Managing Directress of YuSit, Claire Delalande said, with 20 years of experience in cultural heritage valorization in France and abroad, YuSit team develops and coordinates all types of cultural projects. “Our specialty is the development of innovative concepts for cultural mediation. Experts in both, traditional and innovative methods of cultural mediation, our mission is to make cultural heritage accessible and meaningful for everyone. Thus, by developing innovative mediation tools for cultural sites all over the world, like mobile applications, web platforms, digital reconstitution of Archaeological sites etc , we help the local entities to make the best use of the richness of their heritage,” she said.

The app titled ‘Visit Galle’ does not require any personal information, and once downloaded, it can be used offline with all its features.

The app also includes a tips and tricks section which tells the user where to go for swimming, to observe sunrise, and give public notifications for flag rock warnings. Descriptions are in three levels, namely: in summary, do you know section, and if you want to know more.

Jasmine Boudeau who specializes in History and Ancient Archaeology said, YuSit has currently completed 184 cultural projects and covered 55 cultural events, winning multiple awards since its establishment in 2015.

Imali Perera, a heritage specialist from Sri Lanka attached to YuSit sparked the interest in Sri Lankan cultural heritage. “Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage site is an outstanding example of colonial architecture in South Asia. However, the site’s communication needs to be enhanced to make the visit of Galle more significant.

This is why we thought to develop a visitor assistance mobile application in collaboration with Galle Heritage Foundation whose vision is to “ Make the World Heritage Living City of Galle Fort a cultural tourist centre of excellence in 2025,” Boudeau said.

It will be available in two stores: Google Play for Android users and in App Store for iPhone users.

A number of travel agencies in the island, such as, Yathra Travels, Sanchaara, Authenticities, Nature Heights and Okithma Travels have already joined hands with YuSit sharing the download link of the application with their customers. Their next stop; Mihintale. YuSit is also working on a mobile app in 3D of Mihinthale monastery and hospital.
