Sri Lankan girls, officials have a swinging time in Korea

9 July, 2023

The Netball Federation of Sri Lanka said it is investigating a case of several players on a recent tour of South Korea for the Junior Asian Championship indulging in an alcohol-consuming late night frolic in the company of officials and that stern action will be taken against any breach of discipline.

“We will not keep any incident a secret and will be conducting an inquiry into this incident.

“When we find that the information is correct we will implement the punishment without favouring any person,” said Victoria Lakshmi president of the Netball Federation.

Victoria said that she was in possession of the manager’s report pertaining to the incident and will discuss the matter with the Sports Minister as soon as possible.

Sri Lanka finished third in the tournament but qualified for the Junior World Championship.

Former national coach Hyacinth Wijesinghe earlier told the Sunday Observer that Sri Lanka did not deserve a place at the World Cup as the standard of the players was appalling.

Even the national junior netball coach Amalka Gunatillake agreed that she was not happy over the selection of the team. She had pointed out that the centre and the defensive players were not up to expectations and her request for replacements fell on deaf ears.

The tour to South Korea was tainted by a public protest outside the Sports Ministry over what was said to be unfair and biased player selections.
