A gift of a try by Police SC saw Kandy SC take the lead and stay there until full time finishing with a 22 points to 12 win in their inter club rugby encounter played at Police Park yesterday.
Kandy managed to score only three tries, with two conversions and a penalty while Police scored two tries and a conversion.
The first half saw both teams play under the expected standard with Kandy managing to score two tries and a conversion to give them the 12 points.
Police could score only one try in the initial half to have only five points.
Kandy took the lead in the tenth minute when a three-quarter move saw Tharinda Ratwatte go over after a short tap taken near the Police goal line. He added the extra points to lead 7-0.
Police came back with their forwards doing a lot of hard work, advanced to the Kandy SC goal line and on taking a short tap sent burly Rasith Silva over to score.
Yohan Pieris failed with the conversion.
Kandy SC went ahead ten minutes later when they were in the police territory and on working their backs scrum half Srinath Sooriyabandara spotted the gap while running sideways and went over.
Ratwatte failed to convert and Kandy SC led 12-5 at the turn around.
Soon after the break Police came back quickly by stepping up their game and scored a try. With the conversion by Yohan Pieris Police equalized 12-12.
Kandy SC were offered a penalty when the Police defence were spotted for not retreating behind ten metres. Kandy was desperate to go ahead on the points that saw Tharinda Ratwatte take the penalty. He succeeded and Kandy took the lead again.
Then came the gift of a try when Kandy SC kicked ahead and a Police defender failed to collect clean and popped out the ball for a Kandy player to collect and pass to Dinal Ekanayake to go over the line.
Tharinda Ratwatte kicked over the conversion and Kandy took over the lead by ten points and stayed that way until full time.
