Art workshop on Day of Russia

Art workshop for children dedicated to the Day of Russia was held at the Public Library Colombo, organised by the Russian House in Colombo together with Public Library Colombo.

Dr. Saman Weerasinghe, former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia, General Secretary of Sri Lanka - Russia Friendship Society, Anastasia Khokhlova, First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka, Director of the Russian House in Colombo, Waruni Gagabadaarachchi, Chief Librarian of Colombo Public Library, Buddhapriya Ramanayake, Chief Executive Officer of the Russian House in Colombo and Mohomed Iqbal, active member of the Friendship Society and President of Sri Lanka Guitar Association participated in the event.

The workshop was led by Arjuna Jayasinghe, Chief Instructor of the Russian School of Art on the theme “Russia is our friend”. An exhibiting stall with Russian traditional handicrafts and books alongside with a selfie corner was arranged to add flavour to the event.

The workshop drew 200 students where they got to learn a lot of new facts about Russia, its art and culture and drew their own Russian-themed art under the guidance of Jayasinghe and Russian House team members. Most popular topics for sketches were traditional Russian wooden doll Matryoshka, musical instrument Balalaika, people wearing Russian costumes, Yuri Gagarin and space, Bear, the symbol of Russia as well as iconic Russian architecture landmarks.

All participants received certificates and prizes at the conclusion of the session and the event ended by screening the famous Russian children’s cartoon “Nu, Pogodi!”
