Jack and the beanstalk

20 February, 2022

Jack and his mother lived well for a long time using the Giant’s gold. Finally, all the gold was spent and Jack decided that it was time he paid another visit to the Giant’s castle. He swarmed up the giant beanstalk, quickly walked along the long road and arrived at the castle. He knocked on the door and the Giantess recognised him immediately. She wanted to know what had happened to the bag of gold.

“If you give me breakfast I will tell you”, said Jack.

The giantess was curious about the bag of gold so she took him into the castle and fed him. Soon, there were heavy footsteps sounding like thunder. Jack quickly hid himself.

The hen

The Giant came and ate an enormous breakfast. After the Giant had eaten his wife brought him his pet hen.

“Lay, little hen ordered the Giant and the little hen laid a shiny gold egg. After a while the Giant went to sleep. Jack too waited a while and then came out of his hiding place. He quickly grabbed the hen, slid down the beanstalk and landed safe and sound in his mother’s garden.

Jack’s mother was overjoyed with the little hen which laid gold eggs.” We will never be poor now”, she said joyfully. And she and Jack lived well by selling the gold eggs laid by the little hen.

After some time Jack wanted to go to the Giant’s castle again. But he also knew that the Giantess will not welcome him as he had taken the bag of gold and the little hen which laid gold eggs.

The harp

One day, Jack swarmed up the giant beanstalk, went to the Giant’s castle and hid in the garden waiting for a chance to enter the castle unseen. Soon, the Giantess came out to hang up her washing. Jack quickly slipped into the kitchen and hid in a cauldron. A little while later the Giant came home and sniffing the air thundered,” Fee, fie, foe, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman”.

But the Giantess told him he was mistaken and served him his breakfast. After having breakfast, the Giant called for his harp and his wife brought it to him.

“Sing harp”, commanded the Giant and the harp sang sweetly lulling him to sleep.

Jack waited a little and then tip toed to the table, snatched the harp and fled from the kitchen. But the harp called out “ Master, Master”.

Down the beanstalk

The harp’s cries woke the Giant. When he saw Jack fleeing with the harp the Giant started to bellow with rage and chase jack. Fear made Jack run like the wind but the Giant was catching up.

Jack slithered down the beanstalk but it was swaying and shaking as if it was caught in a hurricane. It wasn’t a hurricane but the Giant climbing down the beanstalk.

Jack quickly slithered to the end of the beanstalk and jumped on to his mother’s garden shouting to his mother to bring the axe. She rushed out with the axe and was stunned to see the Giant clambering down the beanstalk as fast as he could. The beanstalk was swaying and the ground was shaking.

Jack took the axe and started to chop the giant beanstalk down. It was hard work but in the end the beanstalk and the giant crashed to the ground making a huge hole in it. The Giant who had fallen into the hole never came up and was not heard of again.

Jack never went to the castle again but he and his mother lived happily evera fter.

Since they had the hen which laid gold eggs they were never poor again.
