Procedures carried out to treat Coccydynia
Coccydynia is a painful tail bone in the vertebral column. The medical term for the tail bone is the coccyx. As there is inflammation in the coccyx due to trauma such as friction pain can be intolerable. Pain is more common in the seated position. Other than the conservative measures of treating pain such as using a cushion with a hole in the centre, interventions can give adequate pain relief for a comfortable living without pain.
These can be
1. Manipulation of the coccyx
2. Injection into the coccyx
3. Coccygeal nerve block
4. Ganglion Impair block
1. Manipulation of coccyx
This is carried out under general anaesthesia. The coccyx is manipulated.
2. Coccyx is injected with a single shot steroid
(Depomedrone) and a local anaesthetic.
3. Nerve supply to the coccyx is from the Coccygeal nerve. This is blocked with local anaesthetic. Usually coupled with the manipulation.
4. Ganglion Impar Block
If you suffer from chronic pain in the genital or “seat” region, and you have failed to get relief from conservative therapy, this procedure may help.
What is a difference Ganglion of Impar Block?
A ganglion of impar block is safe and easy procedure used to treat visceral, pelvic, genital, perineal and anal pain. This injection is a type of sympathetic block that can be used in the treatment of sympathetically-mediated pain, pain secondary to malignancy, neuropathic pain, and post-surgical pain.
Candidates for this procedure frequently complain of poorly localised pain in the “seat” region, which is burning in character and frequently accompanied by sensations of urgency with urination and/or defecation.[1]
