Sri Lanka’s Youth Wing of India’s Melmaruvathoor Amman celebrated its first Thai Pongal at the Vajira Pillayar Kovil, Bambalapitiya last week. Celebrating the farmer’s festival - Thai Pongal - was a rehearsal approaching the big event of His Holiness Arulthiru Amma’s 80th birthday early in March (an avatar of MelmaruvathoorAmman). In fact, last Sunday was the first time, the Youth Wing, held- celebrations for any occasion outside its routine events. Scores of its youth members joined hands and were, guided by seniors for the first celebration of Hindus in the year. For the majority of the youth, it was a first time experience, personally getting a feel of the festive celebrations. -PS
