Lester James Peries was a famous Sinhala film director in Sri Lanka. He was born on 5th April 1919 and began his professional career at the age of 17 as a writer for the Arts supplement of the Daily News. He became very famous in the Sinhala film industry of Sri Lanka by directing the films Gamperaliya, Kaliyugaya, Yuganthaya, Golu Hadawatha, Rekava, Akkara Paha, Wekande Walauwa and Madol Duwa. His film Wekande Walauwa was Sri Lanka’s first ever entry to the Academy Awards. He is considered as the father of Sinhala films. I hope that in the future we will have many legendary film makers like Lester James Peries.
