Sigiriya which is located in the Matale District is an ancient kingdom built on a rock fortress. According to legend it was built by King Ravana. But later King Kashyapa set up his kingdom there. Although he lived in Anuradhapura he fled and went to Sigirya because he killed his father. He chose Sigiriya as his kingdom because it was a secure place for him.
