Bringing-up the next generation of doctors

22 October, 2017

The Galle Medical Association (GMA) held its 76th Annual Academic Sessions last Wednesday (18) at the Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna, Galle.

During this session Dr. Sarath Kularatne who was sworn in as the new President said: “During the past decades the GMA had been striving to improve the quality of patient care and prevent the occurrence of avoidable errors through various research.

Our main aim is to teach trainees on patient safety and quality improvement in treatment.

In this process, there are many challenges to overcome, especially, in harnessing latest medical technology for quality improvement of treatment and patient care.

“To prepare the next generation of doctors to make a meaningful contribution to the quality mission, we propose to implement the following steps: firstly an effort to build faculty capacity, especially, among teachers of QI.

Secondly, accreditation standards and assessment methods to be improved and finally, focus attention at all levels of training and instil fundamental collaborative open-minded behaviour so that future clinicians will promote a culture of safer and higher quality patient care”.

Prof Indralal de Silva, Prof S. Arulkumaran, Dr. Puspika Jayawardena (Secretary) and Dr. Gayani Liyanage attended the event.
