‘CEW: Boost for future development of Kandy’

15 October, 2017

The Central Expressway (CEW) is expected to boost future development programs in Kandy, after it is completed.

According to Minister of Highways, Lakshman Kiriella, a number of development projects have been planned for Kandy such as the Bogambara Cultural and Tourist Centre, Agro-Technological Centre, IT Centre and an Industrial Centre proposed by the government of Japan.

“These projects will definitely benefit from the expressway,” he said, adding that it is important to complete its construction.

The Minister also pointed out that the transportation of agricultural products from the North Western Province to other parts of the island will be eased through the expressway, while the CEW will link the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North Western and Central provinces benefiting its residents.

As the third stage of the CEW running from Potuhera to Galagedara consists of a five-kilometre concrete tunnel through a mountainous area, the Minister stressed that a series of environmental precautions will have to be taken to avert any issues.
