 Values going down the drain

On July 30, this year, an elite society of former students of a premier school had their annual get-together at a leading hotel in Colombo.

These annual occasions experienced a sense of bonhomie among those gathered, their spouses and friends who are graciously invited.

The entertainment too has added a certain flavour which lightens the evening’s fare.

Sadly, this time, a moral decadence was thrust on the distinguished audience. They were forced to sit through a bombardment of profanity and culturally unhealthy utterances. It was for ‘adults only’ the moral derelicts might beg as an excuse.

Does this imply that when children become adults they shed their values and revel in moral filth? What happens to the terms, Gentlemen and Ladies?

There are some, due to a bankruptcy of good humour begin to cater to the base inclinations of morally unsound persons, hoping to get a snigger or two.

This type of vulgarity may be catching on as the mother tongue in certain countries, but Sri Lankans shouldn’t be forced down that road.

These older members, such as their counterparts from other distinguished schools should reflect the values taught to them by those who laboured and toiled to make something out of these. Do not betray that trust.

If an organizer of this event is inclined to revel in such murky waters, do it on one’s own, and not thrust that derangement on others.

Were the gathering at least compensated with the food? Well, that’s another story.

U.U.
