No mail for Mulleriyawa

The mail delivery system at the Mulleriyawa Post Office has ground to a halt, for the past few months.

The Post Office, located in an up and coming area with a growing population, encompasses three major hospitals, Mulleriyawa Base Hospital, Angoda Mental Hospital and the Infectious Diseases Hospital, not forgetting the Ambatale Water Treatment Plant.

The residents and officials are in a dilemma due to the non-receipt of utility bills, bank invoices and several important mail, as the delivery system has come to a complete standstill.

The excuse dished out when complaints are: shortage of staff, delivery personnel on sick list, and so on.

In days gone by, the grand old post office was an institution housed in every nook and corner of this country, to serve the needs of all residents. It is a state service, introduced to us by the British, and has an important place in the lives of the nation.

No modern technique can take the place of the simple postman calling at our homes on his bicycle, with our much awaited letter.

So, it is sad indeed that the important duty has been neglected today.

A.R.P - Mulleriyawa
